The City of Canfield

“Embracing Community”

The City of Canfield is comprised of neighborhoods, churches, schools and businesses. It is home to residents that work hard, that care about their neighbors and that care about their community.

It is a city that is safe and clean as a result of the hard work of its employees dedicated to delivering services to its residents in a professional and respectful manner.

As City Manager, it is my duty and honor to preserve this city’s rich history and to lead it going forward.

Canfield is a city that embraces its sports teams, embraces traditions and embraces community.

Canfield Today

Welcome to Canfield, Ohio.

Possessing all the amenities of contemporary life—access to shopping, entertainment, quality health care—Canfield retains the charm and slower pace of life that has been attracting families since its 1798 founding. Visit any corner of Canfield and, interspersed by parks and playgrounds, you will discover quiet, bucolic neighborhoods anchored by graceful, well-maintained homes of diverse sizes and styles.

Cruising through Canfield and discovering our many-styled houses is a joy. But, while differing in aesthetics and size, our homes share one major thing–every Street, Lane, and Way is well-maintained and consistently-patrolled.

If families rest upon a foundation of community, the building blocks of the sturdiest foundation are composed of service, fellowship, and teamwork. So it is in Canfield…

Embracing Community

Our quiet community has an active agenda. From government to good times, keep up-to-date on Canfield events.

“Its influence is not confined to our own immediate territory but to the nation at large…”

— Mahoning Dispatch, 1907

Highlights from Canfield’s Past

Canfield’s first settlers arrived shortly after the region’s initial 1798 surveying, with the majority of them hailing from Connecticut. A wave of German immigration occurred in 1805, followed in 1852 by Irish Catholics.

In 1846, Canfield became the county seat of the newly emerged Mahoning County. Youngstown, grumbling that it should have received that honor, began plans of their own to right this perceived wrong, thus began a heated, three-decade debate.

In Columbus, 28 years later, the 1874 state legislature came down on Youngstown’s side. But not all was counted as a loss in this kerfuffle. Joseph G. Butler, Jr., in his 1921 History of Mahoning County, stated,

Since that day, Canfield has remained a country village, almost New England-like in its quiet and beauty…prettily seated on high ground.

Following removal of the county seat, Canfield experienced a quietude which remains to this day.

Location Matters

City life, rooted in tradition.

Canfield is a young old city. Pause your technology, head out the door, and in minutes you pass inviting homes and a verdant Town Green that residents two hundred years past would recognize. And yet you are still close to quality healthcare, shopping, and entertainment.
