Remote readers
Some meters are equipped with a remote reader connected by wire to the actual meter inside the building. If it is working properly, the meter reader can rely on the remote reading three out of four times each year. The billing department must read the actual meter once a year to confirm that the remote reader is working.
Wiring not contained in conduit, not stapled, or exposed outdoors without protection is subject to interruption and can cause a false reading.
Manual meter reading
The meter reader walks through each area of the City to access homes and businesses, record readings, and inspect meters. Actual access to each meter is required at least once a year. When a resident is not home or a business is closed, the meter reader leaves an orange door-hanger card.

Submit a meter reading
- Fill out the postage-paid card and mail it.
- Email the reading to water@canfield.gov.
- Call 330-533-1101 to report the reading to the City Office.
Failure to provide the City of Canfield with a meter reading will result in an estimated bill.
Keep meters accessible
Pets
If excitable or aggressive pets are not fenced or leashed, or if an electric fence encloses the remote reader, the meter reader cannot safely reach it. Please consider all public utility meter locations when installing locked gates or electric fences.
Obstructed meter or remote reader
The water meter inside your home must remain fully accessible. Remodeling that blocks access to the meter is prohibited.
Inspect and trim bushes, shrubs, trees, and other foliage around the outside remote reader each spring and fall. Before replacing siding or remodeling the outside of a home or office, contact Public Works to protect the remote reader.
