Street Maintenance and Repair

pothole-patching-1

City of Canfield Public Works is charged with the maintenance and repair of all the City’s streets. City Crews replace sections of deteriorated streets, and as a preventative maintenance measure, we crack seal recently resurfaced streets. Pothole filling is an ongoing operation we perform throughout the year.

The City of Canfield contracts out the resurfacing of our streets on an annual basis based on the Pavement Condition Rating System (PCR).

FEQUENTED ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s)

Who do I call to report a pothole?

Please contact City Hall during normal business hours, Monday-Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm at 330-533-1101

What causes potholes?

Generally, they are caused by water getting into cracks in the pavement and then freezing causing the pavement to fracture. As temperatures begin to warm and the vehicle wheels drive over these areas, fragments from the pavement begin to break apart.pothole diagram (Columbus Dispatch)

What material is used to fill potholes?

Depending on the time of year we either use a “cold mix” or “hot mix” asphalt bitumen. The cold mix is workable and performs well in colder temperatures. The hot mix is only available when the local asphalt plant is open and is a product that performs much better for longer periods of time versus the cold mix.

When is pothole patching done?

Out pothole filling operation is continual throughout the year, but because of the vast amount of potholes that develop after winter, our focus of activities is typically done during the spring and summer months.
